Artist's Description
William James Glackens (1870–1938) was an American realist painter and illustrator associated with the Ashcan School. Born in Philadelphia, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Glackens captured scenes of urban life, leisure, and everyday people with vibrant colors and dynamic brushwork. His early work featured gritty depictions of working-class life, while his later pieces reflected an influence from French Impressionism, particularly Renoir. A founding member of "The Eight," he challenged academic art norms and helped shape modern American art. His work is featured in collections such as the Whitney Museum and the Barnes Foundation.
